Filipino Americans

Filipino immigration to the United States began after the U.S. acquired the Philippines in 1898 as a result of the Spanish-American War. (The country became independent in 1946.) A large number of immigrants went to work in Hawaii on plantations before arriving on the U.S. mainland. Today, Filipino Americans are the second-largest group among Asian Americans.
